When the weather cools down in the fall and winter months, you may miss the joy and rush you get from outdoor running if your town gets lots of rain or snow. However, your running routine doesn’t have to come to a halt during these colder seasons. You can easily transition from spring and summer road running to fall and winter treadmill running in your favorite women’s or mens wide shoes. Here are a few tips to help set you off on the right foot so you can enjoy every stride.

1. Essential Running Best Practices Still Apply

As you transition from running outdoors to indoor training, all your usual best practices—such as maintaining proper hydration, warm-ups, and cool-downs—still apply. While you may not feel as thirsty as you do during the summer, dry indoor air from heaters and general exertion still make hydration a top priority, no matter where you run. Even indoors, warming up and cooling down are still paramount before and after an indoor run to keep you limber for future runs.

2. Evaluate Your Running Shoes

If you’ve had a busy spring and summer filled with long runs, 5Ks, and even casual park runs, it’s a good idea to evaluate your shoes’ tread and overall condition. Once your current running shoes have gone between 300 and 500 miles, it’s time for new shoes. Even if your running shoes still seem like they have life left, they might not give you the return you enjoyed right out of the box. Take this opportunity to upgrade to a brand that specializes in running shoes with wide toe box designs. A fresh pair can even give you the motivation you need to stay inspired throughout the colder months. That way, when spring rolls around, you can pick up right where you left off.

3. Simulate Being Outdoors with Treadmill Settings

Many aspects of your run can feel different when you transition from outdoor running on pavement to indoor running on a treadmill. When running on a treadmill, you can simulate outdoor conditions by increasing your treadmill’s incline to get the same benefits of running up a hill. Some treadmills even have programs that will change the elevation for you throughout your run to simulate rolling hills. If your usual outdoor runs aren’t completely flat, shake up your indoor runs by exploring the treadmill’s features.

4. Keep Your Stride in Mind

One key difference between outdoor and indoor running is that during an outdoor run, your muscles propel you forward. On a treadmill, you have to keep up with the speed of your treadmill. However, you want to use the same mechanics as you would when running outdoors. It’s essential to keep your treadmill at a comfortable speed so you don’t overstride. That way you can keep the same cadence and activate the same muscles as you do in the great outdoors. Check in with your body throughout your run and make adjustments as needed.

5. Keep Your Form in Mind

Even when running indoors, maintaining proper running form is important. Remind yourself to keep your body tall and in a straight line with your head up and your shoulders relaxed. Keep your arms bent at a 90-degree angle, engage your core, bend your knees, and do your best to land with a midfoot strike rather than on your heel. Athletic shoes with wide toe box designs give your toes plenty of room to splay out as well. That way, you can move more naturally through the gait cycle. When you have shoes that support proper running form, you can enjoy every indoor run throughout the coldest months of the year.
